CHEMIN DE CROIX, CHEMIN DE LUMIERE

Text by Virginie Le Guay

In front of me, a pile of boxes: 25 years of work are piling up, there, before my eyes. New place, new life. Paris is far away. My neighbors are now called the Lallemande farm, the Raveton mill, the hamlets of Gobillot, the Bois du Berceau. Joy, excitement, happiness, apprehension. And this anguish too which does not leave me and which sometimes rushes me, in the early hours of dawn, into this barn crossed by drafts. It took me some time to get used to this new workshop, which at night becomes a paradise for owls, field mice and shrews.

The urgency is there. After the long interruption of the move, the work, the storage, the time has come to get back to work: there is no way to go back. I have to unpack. But where to start ? The drawings ? The notebooks ? The carvings? The paintings ? How to sort and what sort?

Little by little, things settle down. As the days go by, order is made: the piles dwindle, the shelves fill up, the objects find their place. The right place. The March 17 lockdown occurs. Stunnedness and worry give way to calm, isolation and focus.

These 40 crosses were born from this confinement. 40 like quarantine. 40 as forty days and forty nights. 40 like 40 days in the desert. 40 like forty days after giving birth. 40 like the 40 thieves... 40 is the number of the multiple: it's a lot, it's many, it's long, it's a long time…

My cross is simple, square, pure. It is the perfect geometric shape. It imposed itself: desire to unite, to gather, feeling of being at a crossroads, desire to feel connected, attached to others, desire to be in solidarity with everyone despite the distance and distance. Each cross is different, unique. Some are adorned with tree leaves, twigs, or apples gnawed from the inside by hornets. All rest on their oak wood base. I wish with this work to participate in an exhibition that would bring together works born of this extraordinary period that we are all still going through. At the end of this year 2020, at the dawn of the new year which is announced, I present to you this way of the cross in white porcelain. May it be for you what it was for me: a path of light, peace, harmony.
